A self-taught artist with roots in graffiti\, REVOK’s career has expanded over several decades to illuminate new possibilities in dialogue between process-driven art forms. His latest body of work reflects the impact of the artist’s transition from the West Coast to the Midwest\, blending inspiration from various cultural and artist-driven movements. Specifically\, this exhibition addresses the effect of automation and factory-based labor across the United States\, including these machines’ phenomenal impact on artistic practice. \nThe Artist’s Instruments is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit with curatorial and exhibition support from @librarystreetcollective \nThis exhibition is supported by the John S. and James L. We will be looking at the process of adaptive reuse in built environment. \n\n\n\n\nThe former Garrity Dodge Dealership at 11500 Joseph Campau is the home to Woodward Throwbacks. A Detroit-based manufacturer of furniture and goods made from landfill-bound materials. Through artistic reimagination\, they recycle salvaged and reclaimed materials into new furniture and decor statement pieces. Their design process gives new life to various materials\, including wood\, metals\, plastics\, and more. At the core\, it hinges on the belief that extraordinary things can happen when people are given time and space to explore their work in a supportive and inclusive community. \nThe Academy is a graduate program free from conventional classes. Instead of a fixed curriculum\, we offer an unscripted approach that centers the questions and interests of artists who choose to come here as they strive to make sense of an ever-changing world. \nOur unique program offers an intense studio-based experience comprised of 150 graduate students where Artists-in-Residence mentor students in Architecture\, 2D\, 3D\, and 4D Design\, Ceramics\, Fiber\, Metalsmithing\, Painting\, Photography\, Print Media\, and Sculpture to creatively influence contemporary culture. The curriculum is structured around self-directed studio work\, critique\, a rigorous academic program and a robust schedule of visiting artists\, architects\, designers\, and thinkers. \nThe Academy is a community of makers all of whom live and practice alongside each other on our extraordinary historic campus. It is one of two former art studios on West McNichols previously owned by her late father Charles McGee who was a pioneer of Detroit’s black art culture from the 1950s through 2021. In 2017 Marygrove College designated the area as the Charles McGee Community Commons.
