It is one of two former art studios on West McNichols previously owned by her late father Charles McGee who was a pioneer of Detroit’s black art culture from the 1950s through 2021. In 2017 Marygrove College designated the area as the Charles McGee Community Commons.

SUMMARY:AUSTEN BRANTLEY MUSÉ -  Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Austen Brantley is a Detroit artist who makes sculptures and installations. With Plato’s allegory of the cave in mind\, Brantley creates work through labor-intensive processes which can be seen explicitly as a personal exorcism ritual. They are inspired by a nineteenth-century tradition of works\, in which an ideal of ‘Fulfilled Absence’ was seen as the pinnacle. \nHis sculptures are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. By choosing mainly formal solutions\, he tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria\, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels\, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations. \nMusé\, will be on exhibition in the Carr Center Gallery January 20 through February 25\, 2022. \nWednesday\, Thursday and Saturday: NOON  to 5 pm\nFriday: NOON to 8pm

SUMMARY:RED BULL HEAVY METAL SNOWBOARD CONTEST @HART PLAZA
DESCRIPTION:Red Bull Heavy Metal is a single-day street snowboard contest that features the most progressive rail riding in the world. Following last winter’s revival in Duluth\, MN\, the highly touted street jam moves east to downtown Detroit’s iconic Hart Plaza on February 11th. With over 40 of the world’s top snowboarders set to descend onto the streets of Motor City\, this one you won’t want to miss! \nViewing is free and open to the public. \n \n\nGates – 1pm\nZone 1 – 2:00-2:30pm\nBreak – 2:30-3:00pm \n\n\nZone 2 – 3:00-3:30pm\nBreak – 3:30-4:00pm \n\n\nZone 3 – 4:00-5:00pm\nAwards Ceremony – 5:30pm \n \n\n\nThe contest is broken into three zones\, each one favoring different trick approaches. Zone one is The Wall\, a 20-foot-tall slab of concrete famously handplanted by Scott Blum in “The SNOWBOARDER Movie.” Of course\, the Wall is a behemoth and will require no shortage of guts to get to the top; ATV riders with little fear and lots transition tricks will do well\, as this zone is made for plants and stalls. Watch out for Rob Roethler\, Dylan Okurowski\, Jill Perkins\, Zak Hale\, Nora Beck\, and Zeb Powell (among others). Due to The Wall’s imposing size and the infrequency of conditions lining up to make it possible to hit\, setting up this spot during Red Bull Heavy Metal for a few dozen pros is essentially opening up the floodgates to a tidal wave. Expect a show right of the bat and likely some NBDs. \nZone 2 is where things get really technical: The Kink Rail\, a down-flat-down rail nestled in between Hart Plaza’s walls. This essential street feature is the perfect combination of size and complexity for flawlessly executed staples and switch tricks\, along with complicated 270 variations to all shine. Things are going to get gnarly during this session\, as The Kink Rail is a prime proving ground for each and every rider in Red Bull Heavy Metal. Individuals with unique perspectives will likely be eyeing up the walls\, too. Jed Anderson\, Alexis Hernandez-Roland\, Benny Milam\, Miles Fallon\, Denver Orr\, Mike Liddle\, Savannah Shinske\, and more will all be throwing down in Zone 2. \n \n\nThe final session of the day is Zone 3: The Down Rail\, a 50-foot length of steel that runs down the stairs of the Hart Plaza Amphitheater. A 50-foot bar is no small feat and in addition to the podium\, bragging rights are up for grabs. There’s no doubt that staking a claim to this Detroit spot will prompt the assembled crew to go all in. Grace Warner\, Brady Lem\, Casey Pflipsen\, Mike Skiba\, Jaylen Hanson\, and Ben Bilodeau will be among those setting the pace in the Hart Plaza finale.\n\n\nStanding on top of the podium at the end of the night will require riders to dominate in all three areas\, no small task given the stacked roster of invitees. Last year’s winners\, Benny Milam and Maggie Leon\, will surely be looking for a two-peat\, but a few dozen of their peers are also vying for those top spots. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 11th from 6pm-10pm for the reception of @deneaudarcel exhibition “New Neighbors” and Paul Farr’s exhibition “World Imagined” \nDarcel Deneau has viewed Detroit as a source of inspiration for over 20 years. Using glass and objects she finds around the city\, she builds images of Detroit that parallel its current growth\, finding that there’s a striking similarity between the approach to her process and Detroit’s transformation. \nPaul Farr (Publius Farrugia) was born on the “large” island of Malta on July 5th\, 1928\, and immigrated to the United States in 1954. He has been the proud husband of Jane Farr for 64 years\, together they have four children. He served in the U.S. army and as soon as they realized his artistic talent\, they asked him to paint a mural in their mess hall. He remembers really getting into drawing at age 12. He took his sketchpad around Malta and drew pictures of his sleeping family members\, local stray cats\, sunsets\, trees\, flowers\, and friends. Since then\, he hasn’t stopped. Paul will paint on anything from cardboard\, rocks\, lids\, newspapers to styrofoam containers. He is the most organized artist you will meet\, with binders full of his artwork separated by year. \nAlso\, Culture Kids event on the third floor for children and their families.
