SUMMARY:Design x Technology Lecture: Matias del Campo
DESCRIPTION:Tectonics of the Latent Space – Designing with Artificial Intelligence\n\n\nJoin Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design on Tuesday\, September 12th at 12:30pm ET for our first Fall 2023/24 Lunch and Learn lecture as we present Associate Professor of Architecture\, UoM and cofounding partner of SPAN\, Dr. Matias del Campo. \nPart of Detroit Month of Design\, 2023 this lecture\, Matias del Campo provides some thoughts on the ontology of Artificial intelligence and its relationship to architectural production. Oscillating between aspects of wicked problems (aesthetics\, agency\, authorship\, inspiration\, creativity) and tamed problems (analysis\, optimization\, prediction)\, this lecture paints a picture as of how architecture might operate in a posthuman design environment. \nIntroduction into various aspects of using AI in architecture design. A branch of the discipline that will for one provide expediency in the design process as well as provide information to improve the designs. The area of AI and Architecture is the fastest growing are of the industry\, thus students need to be informed to facilitate their job hunt after graduating. \nCoAD Design x Technology lectures are free and open to the public. As part of our long-running lecture series\, guests may watch our presenters online or on campus. Register for the location/viewing details. \nCEU: This lecture equals 1 credit. To prepare for any potential audit\, we suggest you register for this lecture and hold onto your confirmation. Upon verification of attendance\, CoAD will supply a certificate of completion. When you request a certificate\, you must send us your lecture confirmation so keep that information handy. \n\n\nAbout Matias \nDr. Matias del Campo is a registered architect\, designer\, and educator. He is an Associate Professor at Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, University of Michigan\, director of the AR2IL – The Architecture and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at UoM\, and affiliate faculty member of Michigan Robotics and MIDAS (Michigan Institute of Data Science). Matias del Campo is the co-founder of the architecture practice SPAN. Their award-winning architectural designs are informed by advanced geometry\, computational methodologies\, and philosophical inquiry. Most recently\, he published the AD Machine Hallucinations – Architecture and Artificial Intelligence with Wiley and his book Neural Architecture – Design and Artificial Intelligence with ORO editions.

SUMMARY:Design x Technology Lecture: Negar Kalantar
DESCRIPTION:META Making: Exploring the Fusion of Design\, Material and Technology\n\n\nJoin Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design on Thursday\, September 28th at 12:30pm ET for our second innovative Fall 2023 Lunch and Learn lecture with Associate Professor and Digital Craft Lab Director at California College of the Arts (CCA)\, Negar Kalantar. \n“In this talk\, the focus shifts towards the paradigm of “”META Making\,”” a framework that surpasses traditional fabrication methods and explores innovative dimensions within design\, material\, and technology. A selection of projects will be showcased to explore the cohesive interplay of these elements\, thereby reshaping the boundaries of creative expression. \nThe exploration extends beyond the realm of traditional fabrication\, revealing the potential for transformation within design research focused on material exploration. The journey involves navigating through the domains of bio-cement\, smart materials\, and performative 3D printing\, enabling the unlocking of capabilities to construct structures with the ability to respond\, adapt\, and evolve. \nStanding at the intersection of knowledge and creation\, the fusion of biology and cutting-edge making technologies leads to unprecedented possibilities. Yet\, we also recognize the pressing call to action. Our world grapples with CO2 emissions and environmental urgencies\, urging designers to embrace responsive innovation. \nThis talk isn’t just about ideas – it’s about action. Come explore ‘META Making’ and see how design\, material\, and tech are reshaping our future for the better.” \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. As part of CoAD’s Design x Technology Lecture Series\, guests may watch online or on campus. Register for the location/viewing details. \nCEU: This lecture equals 1 credit. To prepare for any potential audit\, we suggest you register for this lecture and hold onto your confirmation. Upon verification of attendance\, CoAD will supply a certificate of completion. When you request a certificate\, you must send us your lecture confirmation so keep that information handy \n\n\nAbout Negar \nDr. Negar Kalantar research and practice lies at the intersection of architecture\, science\, and engineering. By bringing together digital and analog fabrication work-flows across scales\, her interdisciplinary research practice broadly investigates the potency of transformable design principles\, helping to create adaptive designs\, building components and interior spaces that are adaptable and demonstrate real-time morphological changes into users and environment. Her current research focuses on applications of additive manufacturing technology (3-D printing) as a catalyst for innovation\, to expand new ways of design in interactive and responsive environments. The main strength of her cross-disciplinary research is to bridge the recent advancements in additive manufacturing technologies with large-scale structures. She focuses on applications of robots in additive manufacturing technology as a catalyst of shifting not just how infrastructures are constructed today\, but also transforming the way infrastructures are designed and built in the future from beginning to end.
