SUMMARY:Design x Technology Lecture: Paul Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Biogenic Building Sections\n\n\nJoin Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design on Tuesday\, October 10th at 12:30pm ET for another innovative Fall 2023 Lunch and Learn lecture with . \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. As part of CoAD’s Design x Technology Lecture Series\, guests may watch online or on campus. Register for the location/viewing details. \nBased on LTL Architects’ recently published book Manual of Biogenic House Sections\, this lecture presents a visually compelling argument for rethinking the material basis of architecture in a time of environmental crisis. Asserting that the most viable means to radically reduce embodied carbon in new buildings is to use plant and earth-based materials\, the lecture and book demonstrates how this approach can catalyze new types of houses that reduce or sequester carbon\, engage regenerative life cycles\, and create healthier spaces for living. Interlaced into the talk are reuse and biogenic projects designed by LTL Architects. In particular\, the lecture will explicate five small LTL designed houses that use biogenic material assemblies as a catalyst for building form\, domestic organization\, and spatial seduction. These projects demonstrate our optimism about architecture’s agency when embracing biogenic materials in the move towards a regenerative future. \nWhat you can expect to learn: \n\nHow biogenic materials can be a new model for 21st century building practices in a time of climate crises and the need to radically reduce carbon emission in the built environment.\nThe primary biogenic materials for buildings\, identifying their limits and benefits while also giving visual examples of those materials in case studies.\nThe lecture will present the unique architectural potential of plant-based materials\, moving beyond mere material replacement in conventional construction.”\n\nCEU: This lecture equals 1 credit. SUMMARY:Design x Technology Lecture: Monica Evans
DESCRIPTION:Little Utopias: Practical Lessons From Female and Non-Binary Solo and Small Team Game Developers\n\n\nJoin Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design on Tuesday\, November 7th at 12:30pm ET for another innovative Fall 2023 Design x Technology lecture with Monica Evans\, Associate Game Design Professor at The University of Texas at Dallas. \nThis lecture examines how the lived experiences of female and non-binary solo and small-team game developers affects their game design practices and creative process\, particularly when making games about historically marginalized characters\, cultures\, and narratives. Solo and small-team game developers often have similar approaches to organization\, collaboration\, prototyping\, public appearances\, and social media strategies when foregrounding underrepresented perspectives as a core part of the development process. \nAdditionally\, these developers use similar strategies when researching\, writing\, and presenting marginalized characters and cultures\, regardless of whether they are themselves part of those groups. Looking both at Adrienne Shaw’s argument for diversity as an expected norm and Emily Short’s writing on the “cost of being female and visible on the internet\,” this talk presents best practices and strategies for solo and small-team game development\, as well as practical suggestions for how female\, BIPOC\, queer\, gender non-conforming\, and other historically marginalized groups can center their lived experiences in the creative practice and development processes of digital games. This talk includes the results of interviews with solo and small team developers that were undertaken as part of the ASPIRE-2 grant program at UT Dallas\, including the developers of In Other Waters (2020)\, Citizen Sleeper (2022)\, Before I Forget (2020)\, and Unpacking (2021) \nParticipants in this talk will learn best practices for solo and small team game development in terms of scoping\, staging\, launching\, and maintaining a digital game from prototype to post-release\, which requires a different practice\, structure\, and mindset than games developed with larger collaborative teams. Participants will also gain insight into foregrounding lived experiences into their own creative practice; navigating the digital games industry as a female or non-binary developer\, especially LGBTQ women and women of color; and creating safer\, more diverse\, and more welcoming development practices for game developers of all kinds. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. As part of CoAD’s Design x Technology Lecture Series\, guests may watch online or on campus. Register for the location/viewing details. \n\n\nAbout Monica \n“Dr. Monica Evans is an Associate Professor of Game Design\, Development\, and Studies in the Bass School of Arts\, Humanities\, and Technology at the University of Texas at Dallas. Her work sits at the intersection of game studies and game production\, narrative systems\, serious and educational games\, interactive fiction\, and science fiction studies. SUMMARY:Design x Technology Lecture: Toshihiro Oki
DESCRIPTION:The Making of SANAA’s Toldeo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion\n\n\nJoin Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design on Tuesday\, November 21th at 6:30pm ET for our final Fall 2023 Design x Technology lecture with architect\, Toshihiro Oki. \nGuests will receive an in-depth look at how the design of SANAA’s Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art came about and how it was constructed. This lecture will give the participants a behind the scenes view of how a seemingly simple looking building was constructed – and what considerations were taken into account to make this a feasible reality. \nThe construction was complex\, so this presentation will give students and professionals a different perspective on the thinking and actions of such an endeavor. \nCoAD Design x Technology lectures are free and open to the public. Guests may watch online or on campus. Register for the location/viewing details. \nCEU: This lecture equals 1 credit. \n\n\nAbout Toshihiro \nToshihiro Oki established his office in New York after working for several years at the Japanese architectural office of SANAA / Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa (Pritzker Prize 2010) to build the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City and the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion in Ohio. Since 2009\, he has been working on his own independent projects. Oki is licensed to practice architecture in New York and has taught architecture studio at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture and Princeton University Graduate School of Architecture. He is currently the Architecture Advisor at Grace Farms Foundation. Architecture should raise the human imagination beyond the conventional everyday. This requires an unconventional process. \nThe experience of bridging the cultural gap of international teams\, clients and locations has led to the focus of thinking globally and acting locally. Every project has a unique set of conditions that requires both an open perspective and a focused process. In order to expand the possibilities\, each project team is assembled from a trusted group of associates\, engineers and builders based on the project’s specific needs. This creates a dynamic team structure that can efficiently focus on the design and finding its subsequent reality. Such flexible partnerships and conditions help lead to unanticipated paths of new thinking and possibilities.
