DESCRIPTION:Walk historic Black Bottom with City of Detroit Official Historian Jamon Jordan\n\n\nAcre for acre\, Black Bottom is the most significant historic neighborhood in the state of Michigan. The history includes the Indigenous Anishinaabe people who lived there before Europeans arrived in Detroit. It also is important when the French arrive in 1701. The French farmers would name the area “Fond Noir” – Black Bottom.\n \n \nIt would be highly important for European immigrants from Germany\, Ireland\, Italy\, Poland\, and Greece.\n \n \nBut its importance for African Americans in Detroit is what this neighborhood is most known for.\n \n \nBlack Bottom recently gained a Michigan Historical Marker and has been the subject of books\, research projects\, and the Black Bottom Street View project.\n \n \nWe’ll meet along the Dequindre Cut at the base of the Lafayette + St. Aubin entrance ramp. We will then leave the Dequindre Cut and tour the Lafayette Park neighborhood to see the area that once was Black Bottom and learn about the people\, places\, and events that tell the story.\n \n \nPlease note that this tour includes about 2 hour of standing and walking. Comfortable shoes and water bottles are encouraged.\n \n \nRegistration is required as class capacity is capped. Please only register if you are able to attend.\n \n \n \nJamon Jordan serves as the official historian for the City of Detroit and the founder of the Black Scroll Network History & Tours. SUMMARY:Poems on Place: Writing Workshop + Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Share poems on place\, space\, and community with guided reflections on the Black Bottom Street View Exhibit on the Dequindre Cut\n\n\nThe Black Bottom Street View exhibit (which was on display on the Dequindre Cut from June 19-July 16) tells the story of Black Bottom through photographs\, collaged together to create a cohesive narrative laid out as city blocks. What story would these photos tell if given words? What stories are held in the places we are from? This writing workshop and open mic\, hosted by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy in partnership with InsideOut Literary Arts\, provides the space to reflect\, write\, and share poems of place – giving words to the places and spaces we represent.\n \n \nFrom 6:30-7 p.m.\, participants will explore materials from the Black Bottom archives and reflect on prompts related to place and space. From 7-8 p.m.\, guests are welcome to share poems\, songs\, or stories reflecting on neighborhoods\, communities\, and identities they represent.\n \n \nPoems on Place will be hosted by Peace Bell. PEACE is a two-time recording artist\, two-time Grand Slam Champion and organizer who continues to move crowds with her energetic wordplay.  PEACE is the current producer and host of the “Open Mind Mic Series” in Downtown Detroit with her husband comedian Jbell and is a writer with InsideOut Literary Arts.\n \n \nAll ages are welcome at this free event which will take place on the Campbell Terrace along the Dequindre Cut.
